INDEPENDENCE, CA — Mary Woodward, author of In Defense Of Our Neighbors: The Walt And Milly Woodward Story, will be joined by former Manzanar internees Kay Sakai Nakao, Lilly Kodama and Frank Kitamoto, all from Bainbridge Island in Washington, at a special program and book signing at the Manzanar National Historic Site on Sunday, May 3, 2009 beginning at 1:00 PM PDT.
Walt and Milly Woodward were the editors of the Bainbridge Island Review newspaper and often wrote articles that defended Japanese Americans on Bainbridge Island, in Washington during World War II.
Japanese Americans living on Bainbridge Island were among the first to be imprisoned at Manzanar. Mary Woodward’s book shares her parents’ story and also tells the larger story of the Bainbridge Island community.
The Manzanar National Historic Site is located on US Highway 395 in California’s Owens Valley, between the towns of Lone Pine and Independence, approximately 230 miles north of Los Angeles. For more information, call the Manzanar National Historic Site at (760) 878-2194.
