Dr. Don Hata, Emeritus Professor of History from California State University Dominguez Hills, will present a talk entitled, The World War II Imprisonment Of Nikkei Was Not an Isolated Event in U.S. History. He will link the Japanese American experience to similar events throughout U.S. nhistory. Following the talks, Dr. Hata will sign copies of his interpretive essay in the Manzanar History Association bookstore.

Join Art Williams and Fred Causey as they share their unique experiences growing up at Manzanar as sons of War Relocation Authority Staff members. Saturday morning, they will lead A walk around the War Relocation Authority housing area. During the afternoon on Saturday and throughout Sunday, they will be available to meet with the public and answer questions in the Interpretive Center.

Martha Shoaf taught fourth grade to Japanese American students in Manzanar War Relocation Center. She arrived at the camp in February 1943 and moved into a tarpaper-covered barracks. “It was sort of like camping with a roof over your head,” she later recalled. One of the few remaining camp educators, Ms. Shoaf will present a 45-minute talk about her experiences as a teacher at Manzanar.
The programs are free and open to the public. Manzanar National Historic Site Interpretive Center is located at 5001 Highway 395, six miles south of Independence, California. Park Rangers also offer guided tours and school programs throughout the year. Call (760) 878-2194 for more information.
