LOS ANGELES — The Manzanar Committee will host a book signing event featuring Dr. Arthur A. Hansen, one of the leading scholars studying the unjust incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese/Japanese Americans during World War II, who will talk about his new book, Barbed Voices: Oral History, Resistance, and the World War II Japanese American Social Disaster, at 1:00 PM on January 6, 2019, at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute in Gardena, California.

The event is sponsored by the Manzanar Committee, the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress, Tuna Canyon Detention Station Coalition, Dr. Don Hata, Emeritus Professor of History California State University, Dominguez Hills. Dr. Valerie Matsumoto, Professor of History, University of California, Los Angeles and holder of the George and Sakaye Aratani Endowed Chair on the Japanese American Incarceration, Redress, and Community at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center (for identification purposes only).

Manzanar Defiled By The DWP

On January 2, the Los Angeles Times published an unsigned editorial supporting the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s proposal to build a 1,200-acre solar energy generating facility adjacent to the Manzanar National Historic Site.

Dr. Arthur A. Hansen, Professor Emeritus of History and Asian American Studies at California State University, Fullerton penned a letter to the editor in response, which was published by the Times on January 4.

MANZANAR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, NEAR INDEPENDENCE, CA — Dr. Art Hansen, Professor Emeritus of History and Asian American Studies at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), will speak at Manzanar National Historic Site over Presidents Day weekend in honor of the Day of Remembrance.

The annual Day of Remembrance observance commemorates the impact of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066, which, on February 19, 1942 authorized the forced removal of more than 110,000 Japanese Americans from their homes on the West Coast. Read more of this post
